Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS BENNINGTON CV 20 AIRCRAFTS

The USS Bennington was part of a 24 ship group in the Essex class. She was the second American Navy ship to bear the name built the Second World War. The name comes from a very important civil war battle that took place near Bennington, Vermont. The USS Bennington was ordered on the 15th of December 1941, and construction started on the carrier on the 15th of December, one year later. The USS Bennington was commissioned to active service twice, on the 5th of August 1944 and on the 13th of November 1952, to be permanently taken out of service on the 15th of January 1970. The USS Bennington was reclassified twice during her service, and ended up being sold for scrap in 1994, after serving as the recovery ship for the Apollo 4 mission. The ship also received five battle stars. Here are some of the characteristics:

  • Eight boilers powered four advanced steam turbines as propulsion, producing around 150000 horse power, some 110 MW
  • 33 knots maximum speed
  • Maximum range of 20000 nautical miles at 15 knots
  • 2600 officers and men served on board the ship
  • The ship could carry a maximum of 100 aircraft

Asbestos on the USS Bennington has serious consequences

All crew members were exposed during their active duty to asbestos on board the USS Bennington. This was due to the high amount of asbestos containing materials that were used for a wide variety of purposes on board the carrier. When a single one of those materials were damaged the asbestos fibers released were enough to cause serious health problems. Former crew members should take a full medical exam.
