The USS Boxer was part of a 24 ship group from the Essex class aircraft carrier. The vessel was the fifth bearing the name, coming from British ship captured by the Americans during the War of 1812. Construction on the carrier started too late for her to see active service in the second World War, on the 13th of September 1943, but by the time she was finished, on the 14th of December, the next year, she was ready to serve in the Korean War which was to come. The USS Boxer was commissioned into active service on the 16th of April 1945, and sent to join the fleet in the Atlantic. During her service she did not go thru any upgrade, unlike her sister ships, but she was used as a primary recovery vessel for the early Apollo mission. The crew and repair teams that worked or served on board the USS Boxer were constantly exposed to the dangerous asbestos mineral. This was the result of materials used and damaged across the ship and even in the aircraft carried. Only a handful of men were recorded to have been experiencing symptoms that could have been the result of prolonged asbestos exposure, but the doctors can’t say for sure.
