The second ship to be named USS Cabot was an American aircraft carrier built during the Second World War. The construction on the USS Cabot started in the dry dock of the New York Shipbuilding Company on the 16th of March 1942. With sponsorship from Mrs. A. C. Read, the USS Cabot was launched on the 4th of April 1943, to be commissioned to active service on the 24th of July 1943. During her service, the vessel received nine battle stars for the assistance in the Second World War and a presidential unit citation. Until her final decommissioning on the 21st of January 1955, the USS Cabot also served in the Spanish war, with great importance to the Spanish Navy. She was also one of the first to carry helicopters and jet engine planes. The USS Cabot was sold for scrap in 2002.
Here the main characteristics that made the USS Cabot an important asset in active service for two separate Navies:
The crew on board the USS Cabot was constantly exposed to asbestos from materials containing this mineral. These materials only release deadly fibers when damaged or if handled improperly. No official reports have been discovered of anyone ever experiencing symptoms similar to those of asbestos diseases. The problem was that at the time asbestos was not considered a dangerous material and was used extensively in its’ friable form which is the most dangerous type of asbestos.
There have probably been people infected with such diseases, but because of the symptoms that are very similar to those of other types of conditions, they have never been classified as being caused by asbestos.
As mentioned above, crew members of the USS Cabot were exposed to asbestos constantly.
