Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS CORAL SEA CV 43 AIRCRAFT

The USS Coral Sea, nick-named “Ageless Warrior”, was the second ship to bear the name, coming from the name of a famous battle, taking place at Coral Sea. The nickname was earned by the USS Coral Sea due to her very long active service, more than 40 years. The vessel received her name after the CVB 42 carrier was renamed from the USS Coral Sea to the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. The USS Coral Sea was built by the Newport News Shipbuilding company, completed on the 2nd of April 1946. The USS Coral Sea entered active service on the 1st of October 1947, and served during the Vietnam and Korean wars. The USS Coral Sea carried jet engine fighter planes and even some helicopters during the last years in active service.

The USS Coral Sea was built to the following characteristics:

  • Midway class aircraft carrier
  • 45000 tons in dead weight
  • Almost 1000 feet in overall length
  • Propulsion was done with the help of geared steam turbines, producing almost 220000 horsepower
  • Maximum speed of 33 knots
  • 4104 men served on board the USS Coral Sea, including officers
  • In the second World War era, the Coral Sea could carry a maximum of 130 aircraft, and 45 to 50 in the 1980’s

Asbestos on the USS Coral Sea has serious consequences

It is known that all ships built prior to the banning of asbestos contained a lot of the mineral on board, used to insulate and fireproof different areas. This created an asbestos rich environment on board for all crew members, and as a result, some of these men developed severe health problems, but because at the time, asbestos was not known to be harmful, those conditions were not believed to have been caused by asbestos exposure. Recent studies have shown the complete opposite.

Have you been exposed to asbestos on the USS Coral Sea? Contact an attorney!

If you have been exposed to asbestos on board the USS Coral Sea and you need to be treated for the disease you developed, you might want to consider following legal actions in order to afford payment for treatment costs (which are usually unaffordable for the general public). You need to contact a specialized asbestos or mesothelioma attorney, and present him with your situation. Most of the times an expert attorney will not pass on a case, instead he will proceed with it as soon as possible. Usually these trials end with a positive outcome for the plaintiff. It is very rare that the jury finds in favor of the defendant.
