The USS Hornet is one of the first United States Navy ships to be named in honor of a lost ship. Originally named USS Kearsarge, construction on the USS Hornet started on the 3rd of August 1942 and finished on the 30th of August the next year. This is one of the 24 ships in the Essex class of aircraft carriers, and one of the eight to bare the name. The USS Hornet was sent into active service on the 29th of November 1943 for the first time, and was decommissioned on the 26th of June 1970, after being reclassified several times. The ship played an important role in the Pacific fleet and also served as a recovery vessel for the Apollo 11 mission. The USS Hornet also carried jet engine planes and helicopters during the active service period. She serves now as a museum ship. As a special fact of this ship, it is said to be the most haunted second World War ship in the world, several paranormal occurrences taking place on board.
