The USS Kearsarge is one of the 24 ships of the Essex class. The third ship to bare the name, the USS Kearsarge carried the name of a steam loop of the Civil War period. Construction on the carrier started on the 1st of March 1944, the ship being launched one year later, on the 5th of May 1945. One year later, on the 2nd of March 1946, the USS Kearsarge entered active service. During the period the ship was an active carrier of the United States Navy it served in the Korean War and as a recovery vessel for the Sigma 7 space capsule, after landing in the sea. USS Kearsarge has also received jet engine aircraft and helicopters during her active service, as well as propeller planes. The ship has been scrapped in 1974, after her decommissioning, on the 13th of February 1970.
