Even the tiniest amounts of asbestos fibers in the body can cause serious health issues, and even more on board United States Navy hips, like the USS Kitty Hawk. Exposure occurred when asbestos materials used for insulation and fireproofing on board the ships were damaged and released asbestos fibers. These fibers are so small that most of the time they become airborne, and so, exposure takes place without any problems.
