Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS LEYTE CV 32 AIRCRAFT

Art of the twenty four ship group of the Essex class aircraft carrier, the USS Leyte was the third United States Navy ship to bare the name. Construction on the USS Leyte started on the 21st of February 1944 and was completed on the 23rd of August 1945. The ship was commissioned into active service to late to serve in the Second World War, but it served in important battles of the Korean War. This was one of the few ships that did not receive any overhaul service during her career, thus keeping the looks of a classic Essex class aircraft carrier built during the War. The USS Leyte was decommissioned on the 15th of May 1959. She was tore apart and sold for scrap a few years later, in 1970. The ship received two battle stars for the service in the Korean War. Here are the ship’s main characteristics as built:

  • Essex class aircraft carrier
  • 27100 tons in full weight
  • 888 feet in total length
  • Propulsion was done using eight boilers and geared steam turbines
  • Maximum speed was 33 knots
  • 3448 crew on board
  • Could carry a maximum of 100 aircraft

Asbestos on the USS Leyte has serious consequences

The ships built in the period that USS Leyte was built in all contained large amounts of asbestos under the form of insulating and fireproofing materials. This created a very dangerous environment for the crew members on board, especially because of the fact that asbestos was not known to be dangerous at the time. Asbestos materials were damaged and asbestos fibers were released into the air. Inhaling or swallowing these tiny fibers is the cause of many diseases today, and so was the case back then.
