USS POINT CRUZ CVE 119 AIRCRAFT

USS Point Cruz (CVE-119) was a Commencement Bay-class escort carrier in the United States Navy. Named Trocadero Bay until 5th June 1944, was laid down on 4th December 1944 launched on 18th May 1945 and commissioned on 16th October 1945. She entered Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on 3 March 1947 for inactivation, was decommissioned on 30 June 1947 and entered the Pacific Reserve Fleet. After the start of hostilities in Korea the ship was activated and re-commissioned on 26th July 1951. It was also modified as an anti-submarine warfare Hunter-Killer Group carrier. After the CVE’s deployment to West Pac the carrier was used as a command ship for Carrier division 17 in The Far East. In January 1956 the carrier departed Yokosuka for California for inactivation at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Decommissioned in 31 August 1956, was placed in the Pacific Reserve Fleet and it was redesigned as an aircraft transport, AKV-19. Point Cruz was reactivated in August 1965 and was placed under the control of Military Sea Transportation Service as an aircraft ferry that was providing logistical support for American forces. She was placed out of service in October 1969.

  • 2-shaft geared turbines, 16,000 shp
  • 19 knots speed (22mph; 35 km/h)
  • 2 x 5 in 130 mm guns; 36 x 40 AA guns
  • 34 carried aircrafts
  • 1,066 officers and men served on board
