USS SABLE IX 81 AIRCRAFT

During the World War II USS Sable (IX-81) was a freshwater aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. In order to become an advanced ship for training for naval aviators in carrier takeoffs and landings the ship was converted from a paddle wheeler coal-burning steamer. Built in 1942 was formerly named Greater Buffalo and named Sable on 19th September 1942. The ship was commissioned on 8th of May 1943 with Captain William A. Schoech in command. Together with her sister ship, Wolverine (IX-64), Sable was based in Chicago. She was designed to be used as a training vessel for qualification of carrier pilots. Sable was assigned to 9th Naval District on the date of 1st of June 1943. She trained a lot of pilots until the day she was decommissioned (7th November 1945). One of the pilots qualified on Sable was Lieutenant Junior Grade, future president, George H. W Bush. Sable was struck from the navy list on 28 November 1945and was sold by the Maritime Commission on 7th July 1948 and she was scrapped in the same year and month on 27th. No other ship from United States Navy has been named Sable.
