The USS Saratoga CV-3 was the second aircraft carrier in the history of the United States Navy and the fifth ship to bear this name. Saratoga, Enterprise and Ranger were the only aircraft carriers of the U.S. Navy built before the war to survive and serve in World War II. It was launched on 7th April 1925, sponsored by Mrs. Curtis D. Wilbur, wife of the Secretary of the Navy and commissioned on 16th November 1927 with Captain Harry E. Yarnell in command. In the inter-war period the carrier proved the value of her type by numerous test and exercises and on 11th January 1928 air officer, Marc Mitcher, landed the first aircraft on board. Saratoga’s main activity was during World War II, in which she took part in many and various missions, and where she received seven battle stars for her service. The carrier was hit by kamikazes in 1945, but survived and repaired. She was sunk in 25th July 1946 by an Atomic bomb test. Her characteristics were:
