USS Sicily was a Commencement Bay-class escort carrier in the U.S. Navy and she was named after the island of Sicily, which was the site of a major invasion during the Second World War. The ship was launched as Sandy Bay on 14th April 1945, bus was later renamed to Sicily on 5th June 1945 and was commissioned on 27 February 1946, Captain B.W. Wright in command. Her operational history is quite brief and she undertook mostly warfare exercises and was scheduled to conduct antisubmarine warfare exercises during the summer, but then, on 25 June 1950, took place the invasion on South Korea by the North Koreans and caused radical change in her operating plans. Sicily was designated flagship on Carrier Division 15 and on 3rd August launched aircraft of VF-214 on their first air strike in support of Allied ground forces. Sicily operated on both the east and the west coast of Korea. Upon her return to the west coast, Sicily was placed in reserve, out of commission, with the Pacific Reserve Fleet. She was struck from the Navy List on 1st July 1960. She received five battle stars for service in Korea. The carrier characteristics were:
