USS SITKOH BAY CVE 86 AIRCRAFT

USS Sitkoh Bay was converted from a maritime commission hull (MC Hull 1123) to an escort aircraft carrier by the Kaiser Shipbuilding Company of Vancouver, Washington. It was launched on 19th February 1944, sponsored by Mrs. Kathryn Mullinnix, and commissioned at Astoria, Oregon in March 1944. The carrier has an outstanding service record which include: she was part of United States Pacific Fleet (1944-1946), Atlantic Reserve Fleet (1946-1950), Military Sealift Command (1950-1954), Pacific Reserve Fleet(1954-1960); operations such as the Philippines campaign, Invasion of Iwo Jima, Battle of Okinawa and the Korean War. Sitkoh Bay was recommissioned on 29th July 1950 and she was assigned to the Military Sealift Service for the next four years, and she sailed between the west coast and Japan, supporting U.N. forces in Korea. The carrier was decommissioned on 27th July 1954 and placed under the Pacific Reserve Fleet and was berthed at San Francisco. Sitkoh Bay was awarded three battle stars for service in World War II and one for the Korean War. The ships main characteristics were:

  • Casablanca-class escort carrier
  • Displacement – 7800 tons in standard weight and 10400 tons full load
  • Length 512 feet overall
  • Two Skinner Unaflow engines, four 285 psi boilers and 9000 horsepower
  • Speed was 19 knots
  • 916 men on board, from which ship’s crew 860 and embarked squadron 56
  • Aircraft carried was 28 planes
