USS Wasp (CV/CVA/CVS-18) was built during the World War II and was one of the 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers of the US Navy. She is the 9th ship to bear this name in the United States Navy. The original name of the carrier was Oriskany but was renamed when was still under construction as an honor for the previous Wasp (CV-7). Wasp carrier was laid down on 18March 1942 and launched on 17th August 1943. This ship was sponsored by Miss Julia M. Walsh and commissioned on 24 November 1943 with Captain Clifton A. F. Sprague being in command. The carrier served in several campaigns in the Pacific theaters of operations and after the War, like many other ships built in the same period of time, was decommissioned shortly after the war was over but was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s as an attack carrier (CVA), then a antisubmarine carrier (CVS).
As a CVS the ship operated mainly in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean. She also had an important role because served as a recovery ship for three missions: Gemini VI, VII and IX. She was retired on 1st of July 1972 and sold for scrap in the next year.
