USS Yorktown (CV/CVA/CVS-10) is one of the 24 Essex – class aircraft carriers that was built during the World War II for the US Navy. It is named after the Battle of Yorktown and is the fourth ship with this name, even if initially was named Bon Homme Richard her name changed to commemorate USS Yorktown CV-5. Was laid down on 1st December 1941, launched on 21st January 1943 and commissioned in April 1943. The ship was sponsored by Eleanor Roosevelt. The carrier participated in many campaigns in the Pacific theatre of Operations and shortly decommissioned at the end of the war being modernized and then recommissioned in 1950 as an attack carrier (CVA) and after that become an antisubmarine carrier (CVS). Because was recommissioned too late to participate at the Korea War the ship served several years in the Pacific, Vietnam War, and also served as a recovery ship for Apollo 8 space mission. After the carrier was used in a movie was decommissioned on 27th June 1970 and in 1975 became a museum ship at Patriot’s Point, Mount Pleasant being a National Historic Landmark. Yorktown earned during her operations 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. Yorktown main characteristics are:

  • 27.000 t standard but after modifications reached 41.200 t full loaded
  • Beam reached after modifications 31 m waterline and 80 m overall
  • 8× boilers 565 psi (3,900 kPa) 850 °F (450 °C), 4 × Westinghouse geared steam turbines, 4 × shafts, 150,000 shp (110 MW)
  • 33 knots speed
  • Carried aircraft: 90 to 100 aircraft
  • 2,600 officers and enlisted
