Yorktown is the third ship of her class of aircraft carriers from the World War II. The ship was laid down on 21st May 1934 and launched on 4th April 1936. Yorktown was sponsored by Eleanor Roosevelt and commissioned at the Naval Operating Base on 30 September 1937 with Captain Ernest D. McWhorter in command. The carrier sailed to the Caribbean in 1938 returning two months later at the Norfolk Navy Yard staying under repairs until she participated as a flagship for Carrier Division 2 taking part at her first war game, Fleet Problem XX, together with her sister ship USS Enterprise in 1939. Yorktown soon commenced a regular routine of operations with the Pacific Fleet, participated in the Fleet Problem XXI and then, the ship was given one of the new six RCA CXAM RADARS in 1940. In order to reinforce US Atlantic Fleet Yorktown was transferred from the Pacific together with other ships. The carrier conducted here four patrols from Newfoundland to Bermuda in order to reinforce American neutrality. After another Neutrality Patrol, Yorktown put into Norfolk from where departed for Pacific becoming a flagship on 30 December 1941. On 7th June 1942 Yorktown sank. Yorktown main characteristics are:

  • 2,217 officers and men served on board of the carrier
  • Earned three battle stars in The World War II
