During the Second World War the United States Navy built numerous battleships. This would have been no problem for the crew members had the ships not contained any type of asbestos materials.

Asbestos issues for crew members

• Asbestos fibers were present in areas that needed to be insulated, other than the boilers
• Asbestos cement was used in some hatches that needed to isolate specific areas of the ship
