The USS Alabama has been ordered on the 1st of April 1939, and has been laid down on the 1st of February the following year. She was launched exactly 2 years later. The ship was built at the Norfolk Ship Yard, and has served in numerous World War II battles, until its’ decommission in 1947.
It has been sent to the Mobile Bay in the state after which it was named, and has served there as a museum since 1965. It has been declared a national historical landmark and has been registered in the appropriate registry.
The USS Alabama is a South Dakota class battleship, and is 680 feet long. The massive size allowed it to carry several scout planes. It uses 4 shaft oil fired steam turbines as propulsion, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 27,5 nautical knots, and a range of 28000 Km at the speed of 15 knots. The ship was operated by a crew of 1793 men and women. It was heavily armed and has earned 9 battle stars during its’ service. It has served, together USS South Dakota, to protect the northern convoy routes, and it has done admirably.
The vessel was built using several types of asbestos materials which allowed for the tiny asbestos fiber to create a hazardous working environment for the crew. It is quite interesting that the USS Alabama did not lose any of its’ crew members in battle, but because of the asbestos found on board it was able to cause severe health problems or even death.
The men and women working to repair such ships were also exposed to a significant dosage of asbestos. Even so, to this day, no former crew member of the USS Alabama has been reported to suffer from any asbestos related disease.
All of the US navy former ships that were commissioned for World War II were containing some form of asbestos. This entitles crew members to some type of compensation, in the case of wrongful exposure. We recommend that you contact an abestos lawyer that can provide with the following:
