Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS ARKANSAS BB 33 BATTLESHIP

The USS Arkansas has been ordered on the 3rd of March 1909, and has been commissioned on the 17th of September 1912. It has served in both World Wars, until it has been used for a nuclear test by the United States government, on the 25th of July 1946, at Bikini Atoll. Here are the most important attributes of the USS Arkansas:

  • Wyoming class battleship
  • Almost 28000 tons in dry weight
  • 562 feet long
  • Maximum speed was 21 knots, while cruising at 12 knots provided a 9000 nautical miles range
  • Crew of 58 officers and 1005 men and women

Due to her performance in the Second World War, USS Arkansas received four battle stars. The Arkansas proved strong enough to survive the first nuclear test she was subjected to, and was sunk by an underwater nuclear test known as BAKER a few weeks later.

USS Arkansas had a long service time and fought many battles, out of which she came untouched every time. Many people serviced on the navy’s ships, and some of them are still proud of that. The USS Arkansas was so well built that engineers conducting the first overhaul and maintenance work said she didn’t require any repairs, structural or mechanical. She was also updated from a technological point of view that same year.

Asbestos on the USS Arkansas caused diseases

The USS Arkansas was built with the same technology that was used for any other ship of the period, which means that asbestos was used. Any one around the ship or in the ship yards that built these large vessels would have been at risk of asbestos exposure, although no individual part of the former crew has reported of being infected with the mineral or suffering from any related disease. Asbestos materials were used because at the time they provided the best insulating and fireproofing characteristics.
