Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS COLORADO BB 45 BATTLESHIP

The USS Colorado was ordered on the 29th of August 1916, and was commissioned exactly seven years later. At the time she was sent into active service she had the most advanced armament in the fleet, as well as being one of the largest military vessels to cruise the oceans of that period. USS Colorado was built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, and her bell is exhibited in the University Memorial Center at the University of Colorado. Part of her armament arsenal is also on display at the museum of history and industry in Seattle.

During her service, the USS Colorado received seven battle stars for her outstanding performance in World War II. The USS Colorado was also helped in receiving those awards by the following technical characteristics:

  • The first of its’ kind, she was part of the Colorado class of battleships
  • Weighed 32600 tons (dry weight, without fuel or personnel)
  • 624 feet long
  • Maximum speed of 21 knots
  • Very large range at cruising speed
  • Powered by two steam turbines
  • Large weapons arsenal

USS Colorado has serviced most of the time in the vicinity of Fiji Islands, until she was sent for an overhaul service of her equipment on the 23rd of April 1944.

Asbestos USS Colorado caused diseases

Similar to all other ships in the fleet of the time, the USS Colorado was also built using asbestos materials that created an asbestos rich environment on board. No former crew member has been reported with asbestos related diseases, although the risk was extremely high.

Shipbuilders at the navy yard that built USS Colorado and those that repaired her and updated her constantly were also at risk from asbestos infection. No people’s lives were lost during the service of USS Colorado, and none were lost due to asbestos.
