The ship named after the 43rd state, the USS Idaho, has been constructed during the period between 1917 and 24th of March 1919, when she was commissioned to active service, until the 3rd of July 1946, when she was decommissioned and sold for scrap a few years later. Like the USS Colorado, the USS Idaho was also built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, sponsored by Miss Henrietta Amelia Simons, the granddaughter of a former Idaho governor. Captain Vogelgesang was her commander during her service.
These are the main characteristics of the USS Idaho, as specified by the builder and designs in 1919:
The USS Idaho did not receive any kind of military award for her service, spending most of her active duty period in drill and military exercises on the coast of California. She was commissioned to join the pacific fleet after the attack on Pearl Harbor, but only after the technology on board received a complete overhaul service.
Like any other American battleship of the time, the USS Idaho was built using asbestos materials in order to insulate and fireproof certain areas. Several crew members were suffering from asbestos related diseases by the time she was sold for scrap. Some of these crew members have died as a result of their illness, known as mesothelioma in the present day. At that time asbestos was not considered to be dangerous, which is why crew members and repair man did not wear any protective equipment. Repair crews and any other people that came on board the ship for whatever purpose were also at risk of being exposed to asbestos.
If you were a crew member of the USS Idaho, you have probably been exposed to asbestos. In this case you can contact a specialized mesothelioma lawyer that can handle all legal issues of the matter.
