The ship named in honor of the 19th state, the USS Indiana, was sponsored by Mrs. Lewis C. Robbins, daughter of an Indiana governor. The vessel was ordered on the 15th of December 1938 and commissioned to active service on the 30th of April 1942, only to be decommissioned 5 years later and sold for scrap.

During her service in World War II, the USS Indiana received nine battle stars for her achievements during battle. Captain Aaron Stanton Merrill was her commander until the decommissioning. USS Indiana acted in the Pacific fleet and she was an important asset in the first months of US’s entrance in the Second World War. USS Indiana was mainly used as a defense escort for carrier and transport convoys.
