The USS Texas was the second United States battleship to be named in honor of the state of Texas. She was ordered on the 24th of June 1910 and construction started on the 17th of April 1911, under sponsorship from Miss Claudia Lyon. The vessel was built by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company, and was completed on the 12th of March 1914, the same day the USS Texas was commissioned in to active duty. During her service, USS Texas received numerous awards for her service in both World Wars. The USS Texas was used in several important movies, and has since her retirement, the ship became a museum. The USS Texas is known for being the only remaining dreadnought battleship of the United States fleet.
