Asbestos exposure can occur under many circumstances, but some are more dangerous than others. For example, asbestos contained by United States Navy cruisers was very dangerous because people on board were exposed to a constant dose, which kept going for years on end, on some occasions.
Some of the people that worked on these ships and helped build them were also at risk from asbestos exposure. In fact, they were the people facing the highest risks, because they handled the materials containing asbestos without any type of protective equipment.
The risks of asbestos exposure for Navy ships and naval shipyard workers were large because of the nature of the materials used. They were wooly like in texture, meaning that anywhere they were used as insulation; these materials released constant amounts of asbestos fibers. Crew members on cruisers, aircraft carriers or destroyers were all exposed to the risk of asbestos related diseases.
Here is a list of places and areas where asbestos materials were found on board United States Navy cruisers:
Experts studying the effects of asbestos have concluded that the Ticonderoga-class cruisers contained the most asbestos materials in the entire fleet. This is probably because this type of cruiser was one of the largest in the world. After this type of material was banned, the remaining ships with asbestos were overhauled, and any asbestos material was removed and repla
ced with safer, asbestos free materials that were already available and provided with the same or even better characteristics. Still, in almost 30 years of service, the damage was done, and many crew members faced diseases that were new to the medical world, and no cure was available.
Navy veterans recall the launching of many ships in 1943. Some of these are now victims of mesothelioma cancer. We can only recommend them to see a lawyer about this, and decide how to handle the situation correctly.
