The USS Alaska was the third United States Navy ship to be named in honor of the present state of Alaska. She was the lead ship in a class baring her name, of large battle cruisers. The ship was ordered on the 9th of September 1940, under sponsorship from Mrs. Ernest Gruening. USS Alaska was built during the 17th of December 1941 and the 15th of August 1943, by the New York Shipbuilding Company. Commissioned on the 17th of June 1944, the ship was sent into active service in time to see some action in the Second World War USS Alaska received three battle stars for her service during the war, and she also went through several overhauls and repairs during her active service. The battle cruiser USS Alaska was decommissioned shortly after the war, on the 17th of February 1947, and was struck on the 1st of June 1960, only to be scrapped shortly after that. These are the ships’ main characteristics, as built:
This is one of the ships in the United States Navy known as an asbestos cruiser, and this means that the ships was built using large amounts of asbestos fibers. There was a very dangerous environment on board these ships, because the asbestos materials were damaged, and thus they were able to release asbestos dust into the air. These days, we know that asbestos exposure is the cause of many severe conditions, but back in the 40’s people didn’t have such knowledge. That is why asbestos was causing so many problems.
We recommend any former crew member of the Alaska to have a complete medical exam, and if any trace of asbestos is found, to contact an attorney as soon as possible. There are many advantages in this action, because a specialized asbestos attorney will be able to provide with legal expertise. With this help you will be able to pay for medical bills with the money received as compensation.
Feel free to contact an asbestos specialist at any point, and receive updated information, regarding any asbestos related issue. This is, of course, completely free.
