Asbestos on board the USS Astoria has serious consequences

USS Astoria, together with all her sister ships and other military vessels of the United States Navy, were all built using several types of asbestos containing materials. These were used on board to insulate, fireproof and seal important areas or parts of the ships, but in using asbestos, they posed great dangers to those on board. If damaged, these materials could easily cause serious diseases, and because of the fact that no one knew that asbestos was dangerous at the time, they didn’t take any preventive measures.
