Built by the William Cramp and Sons Shipbuilding Company, in Pennsylvania, the USS Astoria was a Cleveland class light cruiser. She was built during the 6th of September 1941 and the 6th of March 1943. The ship commissioned on the 17th of May 1944 was sponsored by Mrs. Robert Lucas (wife of the editor of the Astorian-Budget). USS Astoria saw active service under the command of Captain George Carroll Dyer. Serving in the United States Navy fleet, the USS Astoria received five battle stars for her service during World War II. She served in many battles as a defense for carriers or transports, and was finally decommissioned on the 1st of July 1949. USS Astoria was struck on the 1st of November 1969, and sold for scrap two years later, on the 12th of January 1971. These are the ships’ main characteristics:
Being one of the ships built before the Second World War, the USS Astoria contained a very large amount of asbestos containing materials. These created a very hazardous environment on board for the crew. The largest problem was that at the time, asbestos was not considered dangerous, and thus, no one worked in maintaining the materials in a perfect condition, so that they didn’t get damaged. No one on board the USS Astoria has been suffering from asbestos related diseases.
