The ship named USS Atlanta was the lead ship in her class of light cruisers. She was named after the city of Atlanta, Georgia, and was sponsored by Margaret Mitchell. Construction on the USS Atlanta started on the 22nd of April 1940, and the ship was completed on the 6th of September 1941. USS Atlanta was commonly known as a CLAA, due to her fitting with anti aircraft batteries, and so was the entire class. She was used on the Battles of the Eastern Solomons and Midway, mostly to provide air defense support. For her heroic services in the United States Navy fleet, the ship received five battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation for the service provided in the Battle of Guadalcanal. She was decommissioned during the War, and struck on the 13th of January 1943, being sunk in the battle for Guadalcanal. Here are the ships’ main characteristics:
USS Atlanta was one of the many ships built during the Second World War that used many types of asbestos containing materials, for various purposes amongst the ships’ vital components. These materials created a very hazardous environment for those on board, as they were constantly damaged. They released deadly asbestos fibers into the air, and allowed for people to inhale or swallow these fibers, developing a series of severe health problems.
