The ship named after either the city of Augusta, Ga. or Augusta, Me. was the fourth to bare the name. The USS Augusta was built by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company between the 2nd of July 1928 and the 1st of February 1930. The construction of the USS Augusta was sponsored by Miss Evelyn McDaniel of Augusta, GA. The ship was commissioned on the 30th of January 1931 and during her active service, USS Augusta was the presidential flagship, serving on several occasions as a presidential transport, carrying both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. USS Augusta also received several awards, such as the three battle stars received for the service during the War. The ship was decommissioned on the 16th of July 1946, being struck several years later, on the 1st of March 1959. The ship was eventually sold for scrap in 1960.
