Sponsored by Mrs. Howard W. Jackson, wife of the Mayor of Baltimore, USS Baltimore was the lead ship in a class of cruiser baring her name. Built by Bethlehem Steel Company, Fore River, Massachusetts, between the 26th of May 1941 and the 28th of July 1942, the USS Baltimore was commissioned into active service on the 15th of April 1943, under the command of Captain Walter Carson Calhoun. The ship was active in the Pacific fleet, and she received nine battle stars for her service during the war. The Baltimore was used as propaganda by the Korean, claiming they have sunk the ship using a torpedo boat. In fact, USS Baltimore was never used in the Korean War, being decommissioned on the 31st of May 1956 and struck a few years later, in February of 1971. It is widely known that asbestos causes several types of very severe diseases, and also that these diseases remain latent for several decades on some occasions. That could be the case with some of the former crew members of the USS Baltimore, as she was one of the cruisers containing large amounts of asbestos, under the form of insulation and fireproofing materials. When damaged these materials could release asbestos fibers, and if some one on board swallowed or inhaled these fibers back then, they could only now develop an asbestos related disease.
If you are a former crew member of the USS Baltimore, you are advised to visit a doctor and get a specialized diagnosis. If this shows the fact that you are suffering from an asbestos related disease, contacting an asbestos attorney should be your next priority.
