The United States Navy cruiser named after the city of Bremerton, Washington, was sponsored by Miss Elizabeth K. McGowan. Construction on the cruiser started on the 1st of February 1943 and was finished on the 2nd of July 1944. USS Bremerton was built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation. Under the direct command of Captain John Boyd Mallard, USS Bremerton was commissioned to active service on the 29th of April 1945. The USS Bremerton had several facilities on board that were very rare between ships of her class, such as a library, barber shop, shoe shop and butcher shop. She did not have any noticeable incidents as an active cruiser, being involved in several defensive missions. USS Bremerton was decommissioned from active service on the 29th of July 1960. She was struck several years later, on the 1st of October 1973, and sold for scrap one year later. These were her main characteristics, as posed by the class she was part of:
Being a common sight on board such vessels, asbestos materials were very dangerous at the time the USS Bremerton was built. People on board lived and worked in a very asbestos rich environment, mostly due to the fact that they were not aware of the dangers asbestos fibers were posing. Damaged materials were not repaired or abated as it would have been necessary; instead they were allowed to spread asbestos fibers. Any former crew member might be at risk of developing an asbestos related disease.
If you are a former crew member of the USS Bremerton and have developed an asbestos related disease, you might not be able to afford the treatment financially.
