Named in honor of a Royal Australian Navy's County class cruiser, HMAS Canberra, which was sunk during the Battle of Savo Island, USS Canberra was a Baltimore class cruiser of the United States Navy fleet. Sponsored by Lady Alice C. Dixon and nick-named “Can-Do Kangaroo”, the USS Canberra was ordered on the 1st of July 1940. Construction started on the 3rd of September 1941 in the dry docks of the Bethlehem Steel Company Fore River Shipyard. The ship was completed and launched on the 19th of April 1943, to be commissioned on the 14th of October the same year. During her active service USS Canberra suffered a conversion to the Boston class cruiser, and received seven battle stars for the support provided in the Second World War She was badly damaged during the battle of Formosa, and needed extended repair time in the dry docks. He final decommissioning took place on the 2nd of February 1970. USS Canberra was struck on the 31st of July 1978 and sold for scrap two years later, on the same day. These were her main characteristics:
Being built with the technology of the period, the USS Canberra contained large amounts of asbestos, in the form of insulating and fireproofing materials. We know these days that such materials are not good for your health, but such knowledge was lacking when the USS Canberra was in active service. This caused many problems for the crew, because every time these asbestos materials were damaged they created the environment for asbestos exposure to occur. No former crew member has suffered from an asbestos related disease, or a least the official records say so.
Make sure to have a complete exam done and a diagnosis sheet before you contacts any asbestos lawyer. Also, the exposure has to have occurred in a wrongful way, for example on the USS Canberra due to the misuse of asbestos materials. A specially trained asbestos or mesothelioma attorney will provide with the necessary legal expertise to help you gain the rightful compensation, entitled to you by law. The attorney you hired will probably explain to you how everything will take place and what you can do o increase your chances of winning the eventual trial.
