Named in honor of Commodore Richard Dale, USS Dale was a United States Navy Leahy class cruiser. Constructed at Camden, New Jersey, USS Dale was ordered on the 7th of November 1958. Construction started on the 6th of September 1960. The ship was launched on the 28th of June 1962. Upon commissioning, on the 23rd of November 1963, the ship was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, participating in the Vietnam War as a very important assault ship. USS Dale joined the Atlantic fleet after her decommissioning in 1971. She served as a rescue boat for several American pilots during the Vietnam War, and was an important training ship during her entire service, until the final decommissioning, on the 27th of September 1994, being struck on the same day. She was sunk as a practice target in 2000. Here are the ship’s general characteristics:
Asbestos is one of the most dangerous materials known to man, but, unfortunately, this was not common knowledge when the USS Dale was built. Crew members and any repair or overhaul teams were exposed to a deadly dose of asbestos because of the materials on board being constantly damage by normal ware and tare. Anything from minor health problems to asbestosis and mesothelioma could develop from even the smallest of asbestos doses, but even so, no crew member of the USS Dale was infected.
