USS DAYTON CL 105 CRUISER

The Cleveland class light cruiser known as the USS Dayton was the first to bare the name of the city of Dayton, Ohio. The United States Navy ship was built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation. Construction started on the 8th of March 1943, and was completed on the 19th of March one year later under partial sponsorship from the people of Dayton and from Mrs. H. Rueger. USS Dayton was commissioned to active duty on the 7th of January 1945. She joined the 3rd Fleet soon after her commissioning, after leaving Pearl Harbor. USS Dayton received one battle star for her service during the Second World War The ship left the United States Navy fleet on the 1st of March 1949. The ship was struck on the 1st of September 1961, and was sold for scrap on the 6th of April 1962. These were USS Dayton’s main characteristics as a United States Navy cruiser:

  • 10000 tons in dry weight
  • 610 feet in length
  • Propulsion was done using four boilers and four steam turbines producing over 100000 horse power
  • 33 knots was the maximum speed reached by USS Dayton during active duty
  • 11000 nautical miles maximum range at 20 knots
  • Crew consisted of 992 men, including officers
  • Vast armament arsenal
