USS Fresno was the second United States Navy ship to be named after the city of Fresno, Nevada. The Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company started work on the USS Fresno on the 12th of February 1945, completing the cruiser on the 5th of March 1946. It is a widely spread knowledge these days that exposure to asbestos fibers is very harmful for human health. Unfortunately, people working on board war ships of the second World War era were constantly exposed to this threat because the ships contained large amounts of asbestos containing materials used in several areas, mainly for insulation and fire proofing reasons. Careless work around these materials produced damage that allowed for the release of deadly fibers into the air. Anyone coming in contact with those fibers (swallowing or inhaling them) causes serious health problems. The disorders caused by this type of mineral usually remain latent for longer periods of time, but until they start to exhibit the first symptoms it is too late.
