The St. Louis class cruiser known as the USS Helena was sponsored by Miss Elinor Carlyle Gudger, granddaughter of Senator Thomas J. Welch of Montana. Construction on the USS Helena started on the 9th of December 1936 in the dry docks of the New York Navy Yard. The ship was ready for use on the 27th of August 1939 and was commissioned to active duty on the 18th of September the same year. She was one of the ships that were damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was still active in the Pacific until the 6th of July 1943, when she was sunk in the Battle of Kula Gulf. She was also he first United States Ship to receive the Navy Unit Commendation. Besides the Navy Unit Commendation, the USS Helena was awarded with the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal with seven stars.
