Another one of the ships named for a very successful admiral of the 1800’s, the USS Horne was a Belknap class cruiser of the United States Navy. USS Horne was sponsored by Mrs. Frederick Horne, widow of Admiral Frederick J. Horne, and construction on the vessel started on the 12th of December 1962. The builder, the San Francisco Naval Shipyard, completed the ship on the 30th of October 1964. After the commissioning, on the 15th of April 1967, USS Horne received several awards during her service, such as the Navy Unit Commendation and eight Sea Service Deployment Ribbons. After a very full service history and almost 27 years of active duty, the USS Horne was decommissioned on the 4th of February 1994. Struck on the very same day, the USS Horne was used and sunk as a target in 2008. These were her general characteristics:
The asbestos cruiser USS Horne was known for the fact that it caused for several of it’s crew members severe asbestos related diseases. These were caused due to the ship’s high asbestos content in materials used for different purposes on board. We know today how deadly and merciless such diseases can be, because most of the ship’s former crew members only started developing these diseases in the past few years. Asbestos diseases have the tendency to remain latent for longer periods of time. The only way to avoid these diseases is avoiding asbestos all together or at least wearing protective equipment when working around it. Unfortunately this type of measures was not used on board the USS Horne.
