Named after the City of Houston, Texas, the Cleveland class cruiser CL 81 was the third United States Navy ship to have this name. Built by the same company that built one of the other ships named USS Houston, the CL 81 was sponsored by Mrs. C. B. Hamill. Hull CL 81 should have been named Vicksburg, her name changed to Houston to honor the sunken ship USS Huston CA 30. Construction work on the USS Houston was completed on the 19th of June 1943, the ship being commissioned on the 20th of December the same year. During World War II USS Houston was stationed in the Pacific Fleet, and for her services and efforts she received three battle stars. After the end of the War USS Houston was reassigned to the Atlantic fleet for exercises and testing. She was finally decommissioned shortly after the war, on the 15th of December 1947, and sold for scrap.
These are her general attributes:
Approximately 10 percent of the world’s population has been or will be in the vicinity of at least one type of asbestos material. This was established by a recent study, and that study also said that some 7 percent of those people are former crew members of the so called asbestos cruisers. We know that asbestos materials on board such ship were dangerous, but, unfortunately for them, they did not know anything about the risks involved with such materials. Some of them that are still alive today should see a doctor.
The problem with most serious affections and medical conditions is that treatment is very expensive, and as a result, more and more people resort to secondary treatment methods, that aren’t as effective. To avoid this problem if you are an asbestos victim there is the possibility to sue the United States Government for compensation funds which should fully cover your expenses. This is done only by contacting an appropriate attorney, knowing the ins and outs of an asbestos trial.
