USS HUNTINGTON CL 107 CRUISER

The light cruiser part of the Fargo class USS Huntington was named in honor of the City of Huntington, West Virginia. She was the second United States Navy to be named this way. Sponsored by Mrs. M. L. Jarrett, Jr. USS Huntington was constructed in Camden, New York, by the New York Shipbuilding Company. The builder started working on the asbestos cruiser on the 8th of April 1943. USS Huntington was finished soon after and commissioned on the 23rd of February 1946. USS Huntington did not fight in any important fights, and she missed service in the Second World War, the vessel was only used for training exercises and to test new military technologies. She was decommissioned on the 15th of June 1949 and struck on the 1st of September 1961.

The ship had the following general characteristics:

  • Fargo class cruiser
  • Approx. 10000 tons in weight
  • A length of 611 feet
  • Maximum speed mentioned in the original design and blueprints was 33 knots
  • Almost 1000 people, including officers and crew, served the USS Huntington
  • Medium armament arsenal for a ship this size
