USS Manchester, a Cleveland-class light cruiser of the United States Navy, was laid down 25th September 1944 by the Fore River Shipyard, Bethlehem Steel Corporation and launched on 5th March 1946, sponsored by Mrs. Ernest J. Gladu. The cruiser was commissioned on 29th October 1946, with Captain Peter G. Hale in command. The ship took part in the Korean War during 1950 to 1953. Manchester steamed with her task group around the peninsula to support the invasion at Wonsan. Arriving 10th October 1950, she commenced shore bombardment and patrol duties in support of the minesweeping operations in the area, while planes from Task Force 77 conducted raids against North Korean vessels, road and rail centers, warehouses, and supply depots as far north as Songjin. On 8th January 1951, Manchester evacuated injured crewmembers from the Thai corvette Prasae, which had grounded the previous day behind enemy lines near Kisamon Tan on the east coast. The cruiser departed Korea for Yokosuka, on 23rd July 1953, and on the 28th, Manchester got underway for her homeport, having successfully completed three combat tours with no major battle damage. She entered the Reserve Fleet on 27th February, and decommissioned on 27th June 1956, in San Francisco. The cruiser received nine battle stars for service in the Korean War.
