USS Mobile was the third cruiser to be named for the city of Mobile, Alabama. The ship was launched on 15th May 1942 and commissioned on 24th March 1943, with Captain Charles J. Wheeler in command. Mobile participated in World War II in the following years: 1943, 1944 and 1945. She was a part of numerous Task Forces, like the TF15, TF50, TF58 and other, providing cover for fast carriers. Assigned to TF 51, Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet, she provided fire support, served on antiaircraft and antisubmarine patrols and saw duty as a unit of "flycatcher" groups assigned to detect and destroy Shinyo kamikaze boats before they caused any damage. On 20th August 1945, she headed north toward Okinawa and Japan for duty supporting the occupation. The cruiser conducted several cruises between Japan and Okinawa, transporting liberated POWs on the first leg of their return to the United States. Decommissioned on 9 May 1947, she entered the Reserve Fleet at Bremerton and remained there, in reserve, until 1st March 1959 when she was struck from the Naval Vessel Register. The USS Mobile managed to gather 11 battle stars for her World War II service. Some of her characteristics are:

  • Cleveland-class cruiser
  • Weight 10160 tons
  • Length 610 feet

  • 1266 officers and crew served on board

Asbestos on the USS Mobile has serious consequences

The ships that were made during that period contained large amounts of asbestos materials. On these “asbestos cruisers”, asbestos materials were used for fireproofing and insulating purposes. This asbestos material was easily damageable, and small fibers or particles were released into the air being swallowed or inhaled by anyone on board. This could result in serious health problems and asbestos related diseases.
