USS NASHVILLE CL 43 CRUISER

USS Nashville was launched on 2nd October 1937, sponsored by Misses Ann and Mildred Stahlman, and was commissioned on 6th June 1938, with Captain W. Wilson in command. The cruiser departed Portland, England, with 25,000,000 $ in British gold bullion aboard and arrived at Brooklyn Navy Yard on 30th September 1938, off-loaded the gold, and returned to Philadelphia. In the spring of 1939, Nashville carried American representatives to the Pan American Defense Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, returning them to Annapolis, Maryland. At the start on World War II, the cruiser was based in Bermuda for the Neutrality Patrol in the Central Atlantic and with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Nashville steamed to Casco Bay, Maine, where she joined with a troop and cargo convoy to escort them to Iceland. She continued escort duty to Bermuda and Iceland until February 1942. The cruiser became the flagship on Task Force 8, on 14th May 1942, and was assigned to defend the ships Alaska and Aleutians. The cruiser departed San Francisco on 21st January 1946, and she arrived at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for a pre-inactivation overhaul. Decommissioned on 24th June 1946, she remained in reserve until 1950. Nashville received 10 battle stars for her service in World War II.
