Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS OKLAHOMA CITY CLG 5 CRUISER

USS Oklahoma City (CLG-5) was a light cruiser of the U.S. Navy, which was later converted to a Galveston class guided missile cruiser. The ship was launched on 20th February 1944 and commissioned on 22nd December 1944 to Captain C.B. Hunt. Oklahoma City became the first combatant unit of the U.S. Pacific Fleet to fire a Talos guided missile successfully, during her shakedown training. She also participated in several major training exercises while serving as flagship for Cruiser Division 3 and Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla 9. The cruiser took part in the Vietnam War, when she departed for Yokosura, and arrived on 7th July 1964, to assume her duties again as 7th Fleet flagship. When the level of hostilities increased, Oklahoma began to spend more time in the South China Sea and eventually participated in operations "Piranha," "Double Eagle," "Deckhouse IV," and "Hastings II." Oklahoma City was the last Cleveland-class cruiser in service and had the longest service history of all ships in the class. She accumulated some thirteen battle stars for Vietnam engagements as flagship of the United States Seventh Fleet and she is being commemorated at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Texas. The cruiser was decommissioned 15th December 1979 and sunk as a target during a 1999 RIMPAC exercise by torpedoes from a South Korean submarine.

Some of the ships technical details are:

  • Displacement 10 000 long tons
  • Length 610 feet
  • Speed 31.6 knots
  • Complement of 1426 officers and enlisted
