Asbestos Exposure on Ships:

USS PENSACOLA CA 24 CRUISER

USS Pensacola was the lead ship of her class of heavy cruisers. It was the third Navy ship to be named after the city of Pensacola, Florida, and she was nicknamed the “Grey Ghost”. Pensacola was launched on 25th April 1929 and commissioned on 6th February 1930, with Captain G. Howe in command. The cruiser departed Pearl Harbor on 29 November 1941 with the so-called "Pensacola Convoy", bound for Manila, in the Philippines. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the convoy was diverted to Australia, entering Brisbane harbor on 22 December 1941. She then rendezvoused with Carrier Task Force 11, off the coast of Samoa. Pensacola joined Task Force 67 in 1942, and participated in the Battle of Tassafaronga. At the end of the war, the cruiser arrived in Guam, where she embarked nearly 700 veterans for transport to San Diego, which was called Operation Magic Carpet. Pensacola departed San Pedro on 29 April to stage with units of Joint Task Force One at Pearl Harbor in preparation for Operation Crossroads, the atomic bomb experiments at Bikini Atoll. She survived two atomic bomb tests, and then taken in tow for Kwajalein where she decommissioned 26 August 1946. The USS Pensacola earned thirteen battle stars for World War II service. Her main characteristics are:

  • Pensacola-class heavy cruiser
  • Weight 9100 tons
  • Length 585 feet
  • Speed 32 knots
  • Complement of 653 officers and crew
  • Equipped with CXAM RADAR from 1940

Asbestos on board the USS Pensacola has serious consequences

The ships built in the period that USS Pensacola was built in all contained large amounts of asbestos under the form of insulating and fireproofing materials. This created a very dangerous environment for the crew members on board, especially because of the fact that asbestos was not known to be dangerous at the time. Asbestos materials were damaged and asbestos fibers were released into the air. Inhaling or swallowing these tiny fibers is the cause of many diseases today, and so was the case back then.
