The cruiser was laid down by the Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia on 28th June 1943 and commissioned on 25th June 1945, Captain Heber B. Brumbaugh in command. Portsmouth was the third ship to carry this name. After her shakedown off Cuba, she was employed with the Operational Development Force until the spring of 1946. The cruiser arrived at Naples on 7th December and shifted around the peninsula to Trieste at the end of the month, and until February 1947 cruised in the politically turbulent Adriatic. On 25th November, Portsmouth got underway to return to the Mediterranean Sea. In 11th March 1948 she steamed east, returning to Boston for overhaul. After completion of the overhaul, the cruiser resumed type exercises off the eastern seaboard and conducted Naval Reserve training cruises to the Caribbean. On 9th March 1949, she entered the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for inactivation overhaul. Decommissioned on 15th June 1949, she joined the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Two of her main engines remain in service today as part of the MARF facility for the S7G nuclear reactor prototype in Ballston Spa, New York. Characteristics:
USS Portsmouth was built using the most modern technology available at the time, but even so, the need for asbestos material remained. These asbestos cruisers were very used during that period so, the exposure levels for officers and crew members were high. The material would damage easily and asbestos fibers and particles were released in the cruiser’s atmosphere being very harmful to anyone on board. It is important that you take a complete exam, especially for former crew members of the U.S. Navy ships.
If you think, you were in contact with asbestos on board the cruiser, it is important that you know the law is on your side. Contact a specialized asbestos attorney and he will look at your case, file a claim in your name and advise you further to receive some form of compensation.
