The third navy ship named after the city of Raleigh, North Carolina was an Omaha-class light cruiser of the United States Navy. Raleigh was laid down on 16th August 1920 and was launched on 25th October 1922. The cruiser was sponsored by Miss Jennie Proctor. Being commissioned in the Boston Navy Yard on 6th February 1924, the first Captain in command was William C. Watts. The ship served in the inter-war period and also during the Second World War. She also took part to many operations and battles such as in Panama, California, Hawaiian Islands, San Diego, maneuvers at Guantanamo Bay. She joined Cruiser Division 3 of the Scouting Force, went to Caribbean and Alaska. To the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 29th September 1945, she decommissioned on 2nd November, and was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 28th November.
