USS Richmond was an Omaha-class light cruiser and she was the third Navy ship named after the city of Richmond, Virginia. The cruiser was launched on 29th September 1921 and commissioned on 2nd July 1923, with Captain David F. Boyd in command. The ship participated in Fleet Problem III, which tested Caribbean defenses and transit facilities of the Panama Canal, in January 1924. Richmond was assigned as flagship of Light Cruiser Divisions, Scouting Fleet in January 1925 and again participated in Caribbean exercises. The cruiser took off patrol of the Panama Canal in 1942 and started escorting reinforcement convoys to the Galapagos Island and Society Islands. On 3rd February 1943 she became flagship of Task Group 16.6, which was a cruiser-destroyer task group assigned to defend the ships approaches to recently occupied Amchitka. Her firs enemy air raid took place on the 10th, and on the 18th she participated in the initial bombardment of Holtz Bay and Chicago Harbor in Attu Island. Richmond covered the occupation of northern Japan, when the hostilities were over. She was decommissioned on 21 December 1945 and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 21st January 1946.
