USS SALT LAKE CITY CA 25 CRUISER

USS Salt Lake City of the U.S. Navy was a Pensacola-class heavy cruiser and had the nickname “Swayback Maru”. She also had the unofficial distinction of having taken part in more engagements than any other ship in the fleet. The cruiser was commissioned on 11th December 1929, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, with Captain Frederick Lansing Oliver in command. Salt Lake was with the Enterprise task group on 7th December 1941, returning from Wake Island, only 200 nautical miles west of Pearl Harbor, when they received word of the attack. The group launched scouting planes in the hope of catching possible stragglers from the enemy force, but the search was in vain. The cruiser took part in two major battles in World War II, which were: Battle of Cape Esperance and the Battle of the Komandorski Islands. After the war, the cruiser was added to the list of warships to be used in the Atomic Bomb Experiments and Evaluation Tests at Bikini Atoll, in Operation Crossroads. She survived two atomic bomb blasts, but was sunk as a target hull on 25th May 1948. Salt Lake City received eleven battle stars for her World War II service, and a Navy Unit Commendation for her actions during the Aleutian Campaign. Her main characteristics were:

  • Displacement 10 826 tons
  • Length 585 feet and 6 inches
  • Speed 32.7 knots
  • 612 officers and enlisted served on board
