The New Orleans-class heavy cruiser USS San Francisco was the third ship to bear this name in the United States Navy, given after the city of San Francisco, California. This ship took part at important events during the Second World War. This can be also seen in her reward: San Francisco earned 17 battle stars during World War II. For her participation in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, she was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. For the same action, three members of her crew were awarded the Medal of Honor. San Francisco was laid down on 9th September 1931 at the Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, California and launched on 9th March 1933, being sponsored by Miss Barbara M. Bailly. Commissioned on 10th February 1934, Captain Royal E. Ingersoll was the first one in command. She took part at the Pearl Harbor Attack in December 1941, at the Battle of Cape Esperance and Naval Battle of Guadalacal. After the war, she was decommissioned on 10th February 1946 and she was berthed with the Philadelphia Group of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet until 1st March 1959, when her name was struck from the Naval Vessel Register. On 9th September, she was sold to the Union Mineral and Alloys Corporation from New York, and scrapped at Panama City, Florida in 1961.
Here are the ship’s main characteristics as built:
USS San Francisco was build using asbestos material. They have created a dangerous environment in the way that when damaged, these materials released airborne asbestos fibers. The people embarked swallow or inhale the resulting fibers causing, most of the time, serious health problems. It is very important, especially for former crew members of United States Navy ships, to have a complete exam. Do not forget to use appropriate prevention measures.
If you were exposed to asbestos on San Francisco cruise you have to know that the law is on your side. Contact a specialized attorney after you have visited a doctor and received a complete diagnosis sheet. If you explain your situation to your lawyer and provide him with the necessary information and documents about what is known to be the „asbestos cruise” he will then file the claim in your name. In this point you will be one step away from receiving an important amount as compensation, in order to pay for the most effective methods of available treatment.
