During the World War II the second USS San Juan was an Atlanta-class light cruiser of the United States Navy, built by Bethlehem Steel, Quincy, Massachusetts. The ship was laid down on 15th May 1940 and launched on 6th September 1941. The cruise was sponsored by Mrs. Margarita Coll de Santori. She was commissioned on 28th February 1942 and the first captain in command was James E. Maher. After the shakedown in the Atlantic, San Juan started its service history. The cruiser arrived at Bremerton, Washington, for inactivation on 24 January 1946, and was decommissioned and placed in reserve there on 9th November 1946. San Juan was reclassified as a CLAA-54 on 28th February 1949. She was struck from the Navy list on 1st March 1959 and sold on 31st October 1961 to National Metal and Steel Corporation, Terminal Island, Los Angeles, California, for scrapping.
Here are the ship’s main characteristics as built:
Known as a very efficient material when it comes to sealing, fireproofing and insulating certain areas, asbestos was a large part of the USS San Juan, inside and out. This, combined with the fact that crew members were not aware of the dangers made for a very hazardous environment on the ship. Fortunately, no one on board the ship was exposed to the tiny fibers long enough to cause any health problems.
